Detoxification Program
Detoxification can for some, be a difficult process. Therefore, I do not recommend a cookie-cutter program. It is important to tailor a detoxification program to the specific needs and strengths of each patient. Each of the possible methods of detoxification as discussed in my article detoxification can be used in a specifically designed program.
If you are a beginner with detoxification, taking supportive supplements is a must. This is very important. When you begin to detoxify, your body will release toxins that have been stored in your tissues for who knows how long. This is not always a pleasant experience. The right supplements will help significantly. Here is a list of supplements that assist in detoxification and many other helpful processes.

- Enzymes - Digestive distress is perhaps the most common secondary complaint among my patients. Enzymes are essential in aiding the digestive process. They also take part in every process in the body. All patients benefit from enzymes. I often use plant enzymes because they act in a wider pH range, making them effective throughout the entire digestive tract.
- Liver support - I like milk thistle, dandelion, and many others. These are essential.
- Probiotics (bacteria) - Your body is home to over 400 types of bacteria, most of which are essential to health. Products like acidophillus, bifidobacillus, and lactobacillus are used to replenish lost bacteria in the gut. For those with certain types of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, probiotics are a must.
- Essential fatty acids (EFA’s) - Fats are one of the most misunderstood macronutrients of our day, yet without them we would perish. Trans-fats like shortening and margarine are responsible for the ever-increasing rates of heart disease and high cholesterol. Eating good quality fats is a must.
- Anti-oxidants - (vitamins A, C, E, selenium, SOD, phytochemicals etc.). Doctors are learning more about antioxidants and their free radical stopping power. Free radicals are involved in every known degenerative and disease process. They cause damage through a process called oxidation (rusted metal is oxidized metal). Many toxic chemicals will be released during the detoxification process and the likelihood of oxidation is very high. Anti-oxidants are used to stop them.
- L-glutamine powder – This is an amino acid, one of the builders of protein, and is used as a primary fuel source for the cells of the small intestine. Healing an irritated gut lining is foundational to overall health.
- Cayenne Pepper – This ‘miracle’ herb is good for all sorts of aliments especially digestive and circulatory complaints. The fresher and hotter, the better.
- Psyllium husk – A good bulking agent for assisting in colon cleansing.
